INTRODUCING SOLIDS – 6 TO 8 MONTHS BABY WEANING PLAN

by Sunday, December 13, 2015

The time has finally come, your bubs is now ready for food! The little researcher in me has found some of the best tips and pointers when it comes to weaning.

Most new mums have no idea what to do so hopefully my 6-8 month weaning plan can help mums out there to be prepared and ready for whats coming!

Before I had my daughter I was living the young life of mess, chaos and was taking each day at a time, since I had my daughter, I found myself a changed woman! I’m now a super OCD, planner/ researcher, I now have to plan everything I do and think ahead of schedule. I clean a few times a day and when I’m not babysitting I’m researching on what to do next, what products to buy and what to feed my daughter.

Since becoming a mum I’ve definitely made some mistakes along the way but hopefully this post can help some mums not make the same mistakes I made!

So lets get to it.

Here are some common questions when it comes to weaning.

1. When should my baby start solids?

4 – 6 months old, but check for signs from your baby as each baby is different.

2.What are the signs your baby is ready for food?

– Baby watches you eat

– Reaching out for food

– Stuffing everything she finds in her mouth

– Always hungry and the milk feeds just don’t seem filling enough

– Waking up in the night looking for an extra feed.

3. What equipment do i need?

– A good quality high chair that you baby will grow into , if you want to save money you can get ones that last all the way to a few yrs of age. It must be sturdy as your soon to be toddler will soon be wriggling on it and even attempt to stand on it in the future.

– Bib or body bib/ smock ( these are great to stop food from getting on all of bubs clothes)

– Ceramic baby bowls or Plastic / silicone baby bowls and spoons. Check out my other post for feeding equipment – My top recommendation is Le Creuset’s range of beautiful coloured bowls .

4. What solid should I start bubs on?

Organic Rice Cereal is the best to start.

5. What cooking equipment do I need to buy?

– My Top recommendation is the Phillips Avent Combined Steamer and Blender, this makes life so much easier and meal prepping a breeze!

– Stick Blender

-Steamer

– Measuring Spoons

– Storage containers

-Baby food containers- My top recommendation i s Qubies baby food storage containers

6. HOW MUCH MILK DO THEY NEED TO DRINK PER DAY IF THEY ARE EATING SOLIDS?

Breast milk or formula will still be the most important source of nutrition until the age of 1. Eventually solid food will replace some milk feeds.

500 – 600 ml a day of Breast milk or formula is needed.

You can also start to introduce other drinks such as diluted fresh juice or water to your babies diet.

 FOODS TO AVOID

  • Salt / sugar
  • Pate
  • Shellfish
  • Spices
  • Smoked foods
  • Soft / blue cheese
  • Nuts and seeds (although peanut butter and nut spreads can be introduced after 6 months)
  • Honey – in rare cases honey can contain a type of bacteria which, if ingested by a baby under the age of one year, may cause serious illness
  • Citrus, berries and kiwi fruit can cause adverse reactions, but you can start introducing these from 6 months

STAGE 1 FOOD

BABY RICE:

Mix it with water, or breast or formula milk, or combine it with a fruit or vegetable purée.

FIRST VEGETABLES:

Carrot, potato, swede, parsnip, pumpkin, butternut squash, sweet potato.

Mix with a little breast or formula milk to ease the transition.

 FIRST FRUITS:

Apple, pear, banana papaya and avocado

STAGE 2

STAGE 2 VEGETABLES:

Courgettes, broccoli, peas, spinach  and sweetcorn.

* Mix with root vegetables such as sweet potato or carrot.

 STAGE 2 FRUIT:

Apricots, plums, peaches and cherries

STAGE 2 MEAT:

Protein chicken, white and oily fish, well-cooked eggs, red meat, pulses.

STAGE 3

  • Red meat beef casseroles with onion, carrots and sweet potato. You can also add fruits like dried apricot.  Simply cook for an hour until the meat is tender and all the flavours have combined, then puree.
  • Fish poached salmon with steamed carrots, tomatoes and grated cheese.
  • Eggs, cooked until the white and yolk are solid – these are a good source of protein.

WEANING MEAL PLAN

This weaning plan is based on introducing a new food group every 3 days. This method allows you to see if bubs has any allergic reactions to food before introducing another type of food, it will make it easier to differentiate the allergen and can eliminate it before it gets worse. Once bubs has tried most of the food and is not reacting badly then you can start mixing the food groups.
